Asian Tech Press (SEP 29) -- Netflix has announced the acquisition of independent video game developer Night School Studio as its first big move into the game development sector.
Night School Studio's first game, Oxenfree, was widely acclaimed when it launched in 2016. The studio is currently working on its sequel, which Netflix will own.
Founder Sean Krankel said the company will continue to develop Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, which is expected to be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC in early 2022.
Being the first gaming studio to join Netflix, he said Night School Studio wants to "expand on unique and original game narratives and designs with intention. "
Netflix said that the company will continue to work with developers worldwide, hiring the best talent in the industry to design a range of unique games for all types of gamers.
Netflix vice president of game development Mike Verdu said that the games would eventually be included in the Netflix standard membership, and all games will be ad-free and have no in-app purchases.
