Microsoft VP of GenAI to join OpenAI
Oct.15,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Oct 15) -- Microsoft said Monday that Sebastien Bubeck, the company's vice president of GenAI, is leaving to join OpenAI.

It's unclear what role Bubeck will play at OpenAI.

A Microsoft spokesperson said, "Sebastian has decided to leave Microsoft to further his work toward developing AGI."

Microsoft looks forward to continuing its relationship with OpenAI through Bubeck's work at OpenAI, the spokesperson said.

Microsoft is both OpenAI's largest investor and a competitor.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported in early October that Microsoft invested about $750 million in OpenAI as part of its latest round of funding, on top of the $13 billion it had already poured into the startup.

Separately, Forbes reported last week that analyst firm CCS Insight predicted that Microsoft would acquire OpenAI if it fails to turn a profit over the next three years.

And according to The Information, OpenAI's projections show that the company won't be profitable until 2029, when its revenues will reach $100 billion.
