Microsoft to power Virginia-based data centers with renewable energy

Asian Tech Press (Nov 3) -- Microsoft Corp. will power its Virginia-based data centers entirely with renewable energy as it expands its clean energy procurement portfolio.

The U.S. tech giant has signed a 15-year agreement with teh U.S. electrical power provider AES Corporation (NYSE: AES) to procure renewable energy, according to a statement released Tuesday.

In July, Microsoft had pledged to use zero-carbon energy in all its data centers and offices worldwide by 2030.

According to statistics, Virginia's Loudoun County is home to 60 data centers, large and small.

Citing data from Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the report said more than 70% of the world's internet traffic passes through Loudoun's various data centers every day.

More than 3,000 technology companies, such as payments technology company VISA Inc, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft, are located here.
