Meta, Samsung to cooperate in developing VR devices

Asian Tech Press (Oct 17) -- Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc. plans to cooperate with South Korea's Samsung to develop VR devices, sources said.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook co-founder and CEO of Meta Platforms, last Thursday met with Samsung Electronics executives in Mountain View, California.

Although there was no public details of the meeting, sources familiar with the matter said that the two sides discussed a comprehensive cooperation plan for VR device development and production.

Meta has released a new generation of VR headset Quest Pro earlier this month, which the industry said has the disadvantages of expensive price and poor battery life. With a price tag of $1,499, Meta Quest Pro can only run for 1 to 2 hours after a single charge.

Some analysts believed that Zuckerberg's visit is mainly to seek cooperation with Samsung, which has mastered the hardware technology, in solving the problems of VR devices.

In fact, it is not the first time that Meta and Samsung proposed cooperation in the field of VR devices. Zuckerberg attended Samsung's Galaxy S7 launch event at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2016, and highlighted the partnership with Samsung in the VR business.
