Asia Tech Wire (July 9) -- Mercedes-Benz plans to spend hundreds of millions of euros to open a battery research and development center at its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, according to Bloomberg.

The German automaker aims to develop new chemistry combinations and optimize manufacturing processes at this center, reducing battery costs by more than 30% over the next few years.

The R&D center will also produce batteries and conduct tests, Mercedes-Benz said.
