Lenovo to produce AI servers in India

Asia Tech Wire (Sep 18) -- Chinese PC maker Lenovo will start producing artificial intelligence (AI) servers at its plant in southern India, according to Reuters.

The company will also open a research and development lab focused on AI servers in Bangalore, India's technology hub, a report said on Tuesday.

Lenovo said it aims to annually produce 50,000 AI rack servers and 2,400 graphics processing unit (GPU) servers at its Pondicherry facility, which are designed for resource-intensive tasks such as machine learning.

Amar Babu, president of Lenovo Asia Pacific, told Reuters that the servers are not only for local consumption but also for export.

But he declined to disclose any investment or hiring targets for the R&D lab or the Pondicherry plant. Lenovo already makes laptops, notebooks and personal computers (PCs) at the plant.

The company follows Apple, Foxconn and Dell in increasing its capacity in India. And India has also been attracting companies, including technology companies, by offering manufacturing-related incentives.
