Japan's Sharp plans to stop production of some large LCD panels

Asia Tech Wire (Apr 16) -- Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp has decided to stop production of some of its large LCD panels, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.

Citing sources, the report said Sharp has informed its suppliers of the plan and intends to consult with them to decide on the timing of the production suspension.

The suspension involves Sharp's Osaka-based subsidiary, Sakai Display Products Corp (SDP).

In its latest financial report, SDP posted a net loss of 115.6 billion yen in 2023, a more than two-fold increase from a net loss of 36 billion yen in 2022, and fell into the red for the second consecutive year.

And in 2023, SDP's revenue declined 27% yoy to 69.8 billion yen, with a loss of 17.8 billion yen.
