Hyundai recalls nearly 390,000 vehicles in North America

South Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Company recently reportedly issued two new recalls that are expected to recall more than 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, including numerous models such as Santa Fe Sport, Elantra, Kona and Veloster.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that Hyundai's first recall covers the 2013-2015 Santa Fe Sport vehicles, and 203,000 units are affected.

The recall is due to a defect in the brake system that could cause brake fluid to leak inside the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) module, resulting in an electrical short and fire.

The second recall involves 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and 2019-2021 Veloster with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and nearly 187,000 vehicles would be recalled.

The recall of this batch of vehicles is mainly due to engines not fitted with proper the piston oil rings, which may increase oil consumption and may trigger a blowout or cause the piston to seize and stall. Documents show that the piston problem has caused five fires, although there were no injuries.
