Huawei said to transfer some self-driving business capabilities, team to Volkswagen

Asian Tech Press (Dec 24) --U.S.-blacklisted telecom giant Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. will reportedly transfer some of its self-driving business capabilities and team to German automaker Volkswagen AG (VW) after nearly six months of talks.

Chinese media reports have learned Friday from multiple independent sources that after nearly six months of negotiations, Huawei and Volkswagen are close to finalizing their cooperation on the autonomous driving business.

Reports said Huawei will transfer part of its autonomous driving business capabilities and team to Volkswagen, including part of the team consisting of the former executives of the autonomous driving business line and Jing Su, head of the smart driving product department.

In November 2021, the two sides announced that they would cooperate on autonomous driving in the form of forming a joint venture, "The joint venture aims to act as a supplier and provide solutions to the VW Group, and one of the ways of cooperation discussed by the two sides is that VW will pay money and become the controlling party of the joint venture, and Huawei will mainly contribute technology IP (intellectual property)." But such a claim was denied by Huawei at the time.

Huawei and Volkswagen had already been in contact five years ago. Prior to that, Huawei's self-driving product line had already had several people receive HR interviews for job transfers. And a source close to the partnership revealed that the negotiations were nearing the end and "the candidates were all set."

The Chinese firm officials said no further response to it.
