Asian Tech Press -- Huawei has hired senior Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta as an advisor, according to the Wall Street Journal.
With an extremely harsh technology blockade and banning policies in the United States over the past year, Huawei's US businesses has shrunk sharply. Nevertheless, Huawei has not given up on the huge U.S. market and has been hiring lobbyists to lobby the U.S. government.
According to reports, a person familiar with the matter revealed that Huawei has hired senior Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta as an advisor to help Huawei establish friendly relations with the Biden administration, and promote Huawei's various goals in the United States.
In response, Tony Podesta and Huawei declined to comment.
Huawei also hired four new lobbying firms this summer: the LeMunyon Group, Lee Terry Consulting, consulting firm J.S. Held, and the law office of Stephen Binhak, lobbying registration forms show.
According to the disclosures, Huawei also hired the law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP, which is influential in Washington.
Since taking office, the Biden administration has not only continued the Trump-era policies but also further escalated its crackdown on Huawei.
Not long ago, the Biden administration announced to replace Huawei equipment in U.S networks. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has come up with a $1.9 billion subsidy program to subsidize carriers who dismantle Huawei's equipment, a move to completely removing Huawei from carrier equipment.
Overall, the Biden administration has continued the same stance on Huawei and ZTE's provision of telecom equipment services in the U.S. as it did under the Trump administration, imposing restrictions in the name of national security.
