French antitrust agency ready to charge Nvidia with alleged anti-competitive practices

Asia Tech Wire (July 2) -- The French antitrust regulator is preparing to charge U.S. chip giant Nvidia with alleged anti-competitive practices, according to Reuters.

French authorities raided the graphics card industry last September, and people familiar with the matter said the operation targeted Nvidia, the report stated.

In France, companies that violate antitrust laws can face fines of up to 10% of their global annual turnover, but they can also make concessions to avoid penalties.

With Nvidia's fiscal 2024 revenue of $60.9 billion, the fine could be up to $6.09 billion.

Last week, the French regulator released a report on the state of competition in the generative AI industry, pointing to the risk of chip suppliers abusing their dominant market position.

This report cited the industry's reliance on Nvidia's CUDA chip programming software as a concern, as it is the only system that is fully compatible with Nvidia GPUs.
