Asia Tech Wire (Aug 19) -- Foxconn Chairman Young Liu on Saturday refuted allegations that the company refused to recruit married women to assemble iPhones in India during a visit to Foxconn's plant near Chennai.
This follows a Reuters report that Foxconn was refusing to allow married women to work on iPhone assembly, and a subsequent investigation ordered by the Indian government.
However, as of Saturday, New Delhi had not yet released the results of any investigation.
Liu said on the same day that "Foxconn hires regardless of gender, but women make up a big part of our workforce here."
"I emphasise married women greatly contribute to the efforts of what we're doing here," Liu added.
After Reuters published its investigation in June, Foxconn acknowledged some omissions in its 2022 hiring process and said it had taken steps to address them, but also said it "vigorously refutes allegations of employment discrimination."
