Asian Tech Press (SEP 10) -- After South Korea passed legislation forcing Apple to ease restrictions on App Store payments, gaming company Epic Games has asked the tech giant to reinstate its developer account in order to release "Fortnite" in the country.
Epic has been in a legal dispute with Apple around the world over App Store policies. The company said it wants to re-release "Fortnite" in South Korea with a first-party and third-party payment system attached to it.
"Epic has asked Apple to reinstate our Fortnite developer account." Epic said via its official Twitter account, "Epic intends to re-release Fortnite on iOS in Korea offering both Epic payment and Apple payment side-by-side in compliance with the new Korean law," it said.
South Korean lawmakers passed the Telecommunications Business Act (TBA) in late August. The law, dubbed the "anti-Google law" by local media, primarily targets digital app store owners, forcing mainstream app store operators like Apple and Google to allow alternative payment methods for in-app purchases. Developers who currently run marketing campaigns on App Store are required to use Apple's payment system and therefore pay a 30 percent commission. This law also requires that app stores not prohibit cross-platform distribution.
