Asian Tech Press (Dec 17) -- Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the investment in the new factory in Austin, Texas, would exceed a total of $10 billion over time.
Documents made public not long ago showed that Tesla plans to spend more than $1 billion on the Austin plant and intends to complete construction by the end of this year. But in Thursday's tweet, Musk stated that over time, the Austin plant will become a more than $10 billion investment, creating at least 20,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request seeking more details about the tweet. The company has previously said the plant will create about 10,000 jobs. The Tesla plant is located near the Austin East Suburban Airport, and the company is expected to receive nearly $65 million in tax rebates from the area.
According to Tesla, the company began construction in Austin in September and November 2020 on a facility for bodywork, stamping, casting, painting, and vehicle assembly, which will have nearly 400,000 square meters of space. When completed, the Austin plant will produce Tesla's upcoming Cybertruck, Model 3, and Model Y.
Earlier this month, Tesla confirmed that it had moved its headquarters from California to Austin. Tesla also has factories in California, Nevada and Shanghai, and is currently building a plant near Berlin.
