National Business Wire (Jan 15) -- Beijing-based startup Betavolt announced last week that it has developed a miniature nuclear battery.
The battery, which is smaller than a coin, can continue to generate power on its own for up to 50 years without recharging or maintenance, Betavolt said in a press release.
The product combines nickel-63 isotope decay technology and China's first diamond semiconductor modules to miniaturise the atomic battery while keeping production costs low.
The battery represents a significant advancement in sustainable and efficient electricity generation in China, and has potential applications in aerospace, artificial intelligence devices, medical devices and drones.
Wei Zhang, chairman and CEO of Betavolt, said the first product the company will launch is the BV100, the world's first nuclear battery coming into mass production.
The BV100 can deliver 100 microwatts of power and a voltage of 3V, while measuring 15x15x5 cubic millimetres.
Betavolt said its atomic battery is in the pilot test and will go into mass production and be ready for the market.
