Asia Tech Wire (July 17) -- Chinese automaker BYD (1211.HK) is expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia, with plans to build its second electric vehicle plant in Cambodia.

In a post on social media platform Facebook, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said he had met with Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD's Asia-Pacific Automotive Sales Division.

The two sides discussed BYD's plan to set up an EV assembly plant in Cambodia, which would have an estimated capacity of 20,000 units per year.

The Cambodian plant will be BYD's second production base in Southeast Asia.

Hun Manet said the electric vehicles from BYD's Cambodia plant will not only supply the Cambodian market, but also serve as exports to other countries in Southeast Asia.

Earlier this month, BYD held a ceremony to celebrate the inauguration of its Thailand plant, which has an annual capacity of about 150,000 units.
