Asian Tech Press (Feb 7) -- An employee of Chinese video sharing website Bilibili (Nasdaq: BILI), died from alleged overwork.
Sources said a 25-year-old man, who worked as content reviewer at Bilibili, died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on Saturday after being asked to work overtime during Chinese New Year holidays, under the intensity of the daily work from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
According to people familiar with the matter, a content reviewer at the video sharing website works in three shifts, with mandatory working hours of up to 12 hours a day. And the deceased employee was previously working mainly as a graphic reviewer.
Another person claiming to be the deceased's cousin posted on China's Twitter-like Weibo that the man, who was the only son in the family, was buried on Sunday and his family called to inform the company, but no one came to offer condolences and the family was ready to go to the lawyer after dealing with the aftermath.
Bilibili responded to the matter through an internal letter issued by email on Monday, mentioning that the employee, who joined the company in May 2020, suddenly became unwell at home in the afternoon of Feb. 4 and sought urgent medical attention. At around 8 p.m. that day, he died due to a massive brain hemorrhage after an ineffective rescue attempt.
The internal letter said, for the online rumors that he died suddenly due to overtime, by internal attendance verification, the employee worked normally according to the work schedule, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a 5-day workweek, and there was no overtime and other cases in the week before the incident.
"At present, we have set up a special team, working with the police and family members to deal with follow-up matters, and make every effort to do a good job of pacifying relatives and related aftercare work," Bilibili's internal letter mentioned.
