Apple's first 5G chip said to not yet support mmWave
Sep.20,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Sep 20) -- The first version of Apple's in-house 5G modem may not support millimeter wave technology, according to Taiwan's DIGITIMES.

This means that Apple will likely continue to rely on its existing 5G chip supplier Qualcomm to provide 5G chips for millimeter-wave-enabled iPhone models.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, said in July that two iPhones with Apple's own 5G modem would hit the market in 2025, including a new iPhone SE (in Q1) and an ultra-thin iPhone 17 (in Q3).

Currently, all iPhones on sale feature Qualcomm's baseband chips, but Kuo expects Apple to gradually move to in-house research.

Earlier this year, Apple extended its 5G baseband chip supply agreement with Qualcomm until 2026, so Apple still has plenty of time.
