Asian Tech Press (Dec 27) -- The Foxconn factory in Chennai, India, has been shut down for several days following a massive employee protest. The protest was caused by a food poisoning incident in the factory canteen, which led to 150 employees being hospitalized.
The latest news indicates that Foxconn has acceded to the employees' demands and will increase the number of dormitory areas, replace bathing facilities, provide drinking water, and improve the factory's working environment and living environment. In addition, the Chennai plant will be expanded and more employees will be hired.
The plant is currently the main production facility for iPhones in India. The Chennai plant has been shut down since Dec. 18, with employees and their families staging protests that at one point blocked a local highway. Foxconn said the factory will resume production today (Dec. 27).
The company also decided to increase investment in its subsidiary in India by $350 million. Market participants interpreted the move as an attempt to expand Apple's iPhone production capacity.
