Asia Tech Wire (Oct 22) -- Christian Scherer, chief executive officer of Airbus' commercial aircraft division, said Tuesday that the company may boost output at its Tianjin plant in the future as China's passenger demand has rebounded significantly and demand for aircraft capacity continues to grow.
He said China's self-developed C919 airplane is a competitor to Airbus, but as the market continues to grow, he believes there is enough room to accommodate new competitors, which he welcomes.
Asked about the recent spate of accidents involving Boeing's airplanes, Scherer argued that such incidents suffered by competitors would not bring new opportunities for the business.
He pointed out that the aviation market is competitive and the decline of a competitor is not necessarily good for Airbus or the industry.
Airbus has been operating its Tianjin plant since September 2008, assembling the A320 family of airplanes.
