On July 16, local time, Indonesian President Prabowo made a speech on the tariff negotiations between Indonesia and the United States, saying that he had communicated with US President Trump on relevant issues and called Trump a "tough negotiator", but Indonesia remained optimistic about the prospects of bilateral economic and trade negotiations. Prabowo also confirmed that Indonesia's national airline will purchase a new batch of Boeing aircraft. He also pointed out that Indonesia is still highly dependent on imports in the energy and agricultural sectors, including products such as fuel, natural gas, wheat and soybeans, and these key areas may become important topics for bilateral reciprocal trade negotiations in the future. As for whether he plans to visit the United States, Prabowo said he may go to Washington in September or October this year, and emphasized that tariffs will be one of the key topics of this visit. Previously, the US government announced an increase in tariffs on some imported goods, including Indonesian textiles and furniture. At present, Indonesia has initially won a transitional arrangement to temporarily reduce tariffs to 19%, but Indonesian officials are still pushing for further cuts in tariffs to achieve fairer trade conditions.
