The official website of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Organization recently announced that after decades of efforts, the "artificial sun" built by more than 30 countries has completed the construction of all components of its "electromagnetic heart" - the world's largest and most powerful pulsed superconducting electromagnet system. This achievement was called a "milestone achievement" by ITER, marking a key step for mankind to achieve controlled nuclear fusion energy. This magnet system is composed of a central solenoid and six annular poloidal field magnets working together. The central solenoid is a cylindrical magnet with a total height of 18 meters and a diameter of 4.25 meters. The magnetic field strength is 13 Tesla, which is equivalent to 280,000 times the earth's magnetic field. It is strong enough to lift an aircraft carrier, and the structural strength can withstand a force equivalent to twice the thrust of a space shuttle launch. The annular poloidal field magnet is a superconducting magnetic ring with a diameter of 9 to 25 meters, and China participated in the manufacturing. The weight of the fully assembled pulsed magnet system will be close to 3,000 tons.
